According to this article by Karen Matthews at the AP, Newsday columnist Jimmy Breslin used quotes from an interview he stated took place in 1992 at the Republican National Convention for a current piece. The quotes, attributed to Rev. Louis Sheldon, who is the chairman of the Traditional Values Coalition, were not very kind towards homosexuals, with Sheldon allegedly saying that “Homosexuals are dangerous,” and that “they grab [your] son and run off with him.” Sheldon not only refutes the quotes, but “does not recall” meeting Breslin at that time in 1992.
The validity of the quotes is definitely a concern, and the fact that he used Sheldon as a source earlier is quite peculiar, for this all to be coming out now about not meeting Breslin. At the bare minimum, I expect that we’ll hear something about the fact that Breslin took a quote from over a decade ago and inserted it into a column - and didn’t say that it was that old. Typically you would outline how you got the quote or that you met with person “x” at a certain time.
