Once in a while, a great thing breaks its way into the public eye from a source that you wouldn’t necessarily expect. If you were looking for a reason to start reading alternative newsweeklies, you have your reason here. In the article, which came my way via Debra Galant, a memo from the Coalition Provisional Authority (the group setting up the new government in Iraq) has been acquired by the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies (AAN). The contents of the memo plainly state that the Coalition, in effect, not only “contradicts the rosy view of Iraq offered in public statements by the Bush Administration,” but seems to believe that the possibility of a civil war in the country after power is handed over on June 30th to the Iraqi Governing Council is not just that - a possibility. So if you were a betting person, you might want to take war and give up the points.
