Blogs, mainstream media, and credibility

October 1st, 2004 · No Comments

Online Journalism Review features an article by Staci D. Kramer on Friday about the differences in today’s media world, where bloggers and “mainstream” media collide. Kramer makes a point that stands alone in the article and should stand alone in the eyes of anyone looking to partake in journalism, blogging, or wherever the two shall meet… Speaking of the media and bloggers, she reminds us that:

Both rely on credibility — and both can lose it in an instant.

Being too quick to the trigger isn’t worth it, really. Sure, bloggers are usually good at posting retractions/corrections, but how many of those do you want to have? The media as a whole is probably somewhat guilty as well in this age of 24-hour news cycles, but being “caught” with a mistake is much more costly than it might have been a decade ago.
