Newspapers with RSS: A List

December 10th, 2004 · 24 Comments

It took a little longer than expected, but I’ve compiled what I believe to be a solid list of U.S. newspapers that offer RSS feeds. The list includes newspapers listed in the Yahoo! directory, including college/university publications when available. While it might be incomplete, it’s the best list I’ve been able to put together based on resources (and patience) available.

Next steps: I plan on contacting the PR contacts at some of the larger newspaper companies and asking them if a) they have feeds available that haven’t been found yet or b) when they plan, if ever, to implement them. Progress will be posted here or in a new entry on TMD. Thanks to everyone who sent me sites I didn’t have yet or posted them in the comments - they were very helpful. [12/14: I think I’m going to make notations about many of the publications, to clarify them a bit, i.e. daily/weekly, etc.]

As always, any suggestions are greatly appreciated in the comments section or via email.

    Get Some News

Tom over at The Media Drop is compiling a list of newspapers that have rss feeds.

Find some news for your feed reader (I’m still happily using Bloglines), or lend a hand if you know of a paper he’s missing.

Disclosure: I work for The Baltimore Sun. One thing I wish more sites would try is the little trick we cooked up that turns any site search into an RSS feed. Just go to any page on baltimoresun.com, enter a search into the box at the top of the page and in the search results you’ll see the familiar orange and white XML button. Very simple, and easy to implement.

I have no idea if you care to count these, since I created them for cvillenews.com, my community new blog, which is to say that they’re not official.

    Charlottesville Daily Progress: http://www.cvillenews.com/feeds/progress/
University of Virginia’s Cavalier Daily: http://www.cvillenews.com/feeds/cavdaily/

The latter will be funky right now, since they’re not publishing during winter break.

    Hey Tom,

This list would be much more useful for me if you provided it in OPML, so I could directly import them into my newsreader.

Obviously the ones that link to an HTML page with multiple feeds would need to be worked out somehow.

    Cheers,
    Matt Ryall
