Just caught this story about how MSNBC has ditched the simulcast of Don Imus’ show, based out of WFAN in New York, after the host made racially inappropriate comments about the Rutgers’ women’s basketball team. Obviously the network was going to make a decision based on the public outcry it has been hit with, but it’s pretty clear that the demands (or retreats) by major, major advertisers are going to have just as much, or more, of an effect.
I just don’t know how I feel about this at this point. If you’ve read this site for awhile, you’ll probably notice that I’m a regular listener to the Imus show, and have been for some time now. That being said, while I can see *why* he said what he said, and what his intent may have been, but the whole point is that he should so know better. Additionally, while his comments since have obviously shown how he feels about it of late, that doesn’t mean that he shouldn’t expect this kind of reaction - or this kind of reaction to continue.
The other thing that I’m just not sure about is how it’s been discussed that his show should expand its horizons or whatever. At this point, it just feels like pandering or overdoing it, rather than just figuring things out and going from there. Either way, Monday brings the start of a two-week suspension for the radio show, and this will surely be debated left and right while he’s off the air.
More on this soon, most likely.
