Now that title may seem a big aggressive, but I’m not sure that is completely the case. On Saturday, CBS Radio announced its second major firing in a month, this time with “The Dog House with JV and Elvis” being booted from the network’s WFNY-AM station.
Whether or not the firing is justified or not truly depends on what your opinion is on what each instance brings into play. If you find a talk show that is calling a Chinese restaurant while imitating someone with an “exxagerated” accent to be over the top, then you’re okay with it. If it’s not something you find offensive, then so be it. Presumably, all of these instances will have their supporters and detractors, but what it brings into play is that pretty much anything that is potentially “against” any particular group could be brought into play.
While I agree with some of the hammering of talkers, I don’t think it’s all on the up and up. Unfortunately, this is going to just add more and more fuel to the fire when it comes to being overly politically correct, as well, and I most certainly hope that if we’re going to go after my new personal cause - North Dakota’s Fighting Sioux - then we’re going to go after Notre Dame’s Fighting Irish, because I don’t see how that particular moniker is any better than any other one that has been slammed before. But I digress.
What will be most interesting it to see how this affects those with a specific political slant, as they tend to be quite vociferous about hating - sorry, that’s the right word in a lot of cases - their opponents. The only problem is that the big targets - Bill O’Reilly, Anne Coulter, to name a few - are now going to be gone over with a fine-toothed comb, and I think we all need to grow up just a little bit, or everything is going to be pay-for-play, hence the continued growth of satellite radio and other products, such as over-the-Internet content.
