Looking for a new idea

Okay, it’s about time I wrote this post, so here it is. As regular or longtime readers of TMD might have noticed, I’ve been more than last for the last year or two as compared to the demented pace at which I churned through 2004 and 2005 on this blog. It’s gone from being full of interviews and other fun to detailed, opinionated coverage of all things media. Of course, throughout that time and since, plenty of other people - some who are doing it as their day job - have come about, and done things significantly better than I could have hoped to. At the same time, I’ve changed jobs to a fantastic gig where I get to work on this blog and online social media stuff all day long, but I still want to have something of a solid persona here at TMD. So here’s what I’m going to suggest: I’ll make suggestions of what I plan on actually doing on a regular basis, and I’ll let you share, via the comments, what you’d like to see beyond that. How’s that sound?

What I will continue doing here:

  • Continue chiming in on trends and sharing tidbits and items that I catch in my daily reading and inbox
  • Cover the Super Bowl advertising fest like I had been when Chris Thilk and I were at AdJab
  • Cover any media-focused events that I get the privilege of attending

And here’s what I’d like to do some of, just to add some real value to the site, so let me know what you like and what you don’t care about:

  • Re-start doing some of the fun interviews - hopefully one per month - of media folks, bringing us back to some of the ones I did in years past
  • Do more quick hits, and listy sort of things that tend to draw attention to things that I find of interest that I think my readership would be into as well
  • Continue popping in with movie, music, and book reviews and commentaries as I haven’t adjusted my digestion of those bits of content
  • What else? What is of interest that you’d actually care to see my two cents on?

Thanks for your time, and I truly value your opinion.

Since you pay me to have opinions on such matters, here it is: The online media criticism wing is full of long-form content, but a lot of it makes me feel as if I’m in a Saw-esque “cut off my own leg to escape or die” situation. If you can do longer interviews or opinion pieces but make them readable you’re going to fill a very present and important gap in the current offerings.

I’d say save the real media-focused link lists and reviews for TMD. Shunt other music and book reviews over to TB.com. I think that will get TMD back on brand-track.

And yes, I’m billing you for this.
