Earlier today, I received a message from the group putting together StopFCC.com, and it let me know that you can now just as easily as you can put in your zip code and some basic information, you can send a fax or email to your state's U.S. Senator.
While I think to say the FCC has to be shut down in its entirety is ridiculous - it does, and should have, good points - something needs to be done. We're in the middle of some very ugly times in this country, and our attorney general and the FCC folks have nothing better to do than randomly pick out who they want to fine for being indecent. C'mon.
And it's not that I don't respect the thoughts and wishes of those who believe, truly, that what Howard Stern and others have to say is "indecent" - I really do. But I think there needs to be a reality check here. While these people might have a point, and have a right to do so in the United States - they don't speak for everyone, certainly. This isn't 1950, but we're on the way at the rate things are moving.
And to think, this is the same organization that actually wants to regulate satellite and cable television programming in the same manner they want to do with "over the air". Whatever. I'm watching Chris Rock's latest stand-up special off of my TiVo, and after watching the first fifteen minutes, I could see John Aschroft running out of the room screaming if he was at "Take Your Attorney General To Work Day" at the FCC offices the day they were screening this thing.
I consider myself a well educated person who makes a good living, has a decent head on his shoulders, and can tell the difference between right and wrong. But I still like watching Chris Rock, I still like hearing and seeing a lot of things. Take that away, and I don't think the FCC and others on the decency patrol will know what to do once they see their plan come to fruition. "Oh, crap - howcome no one is watching television?" Mark my words - that happens - it happens. And, right before Ray Bradbury looks like Nostradamus, people will be all over pay per view for whatever they want to see.
