I'm watching Senator Zell Miller on MSNBC's coverage of the RNC tonight, and Chris Matthews is really getting into it with him. Matthews is doing his usual ask a question, give a chance for two words to come out, and then asking another question.
Miller is taking exactly zero of it. When asked what he meant in his speech by saying that Kerry would defend America with "spitballs," he answered pretty well. Miller pulls out a piece of paper with the platform from John Kerry himself out of his suit pocket, stating that Kerry's record clearly states that he does not stand behind various weapons to defend our country, going back to MX missiles. Matthews re-asks Miller about the "spitballs," and Miller responds with admiration towards Kerry's service in the military. After a few "WHAT?" questions from the Senator, Miller calls out Matthews for asking him something that doesn't seem relevant to the discussion about Kerry's defense policies. "That doesn't have anything to do with what I said up there." Again, the "spitballs" - the Senator was saying that Matthews should surely understand metaphor, and Miller goes on and on with the various defense initiatives that Kerry doesn't agree with. He follows that up with "You've got to quit using these Democratic talking points..." After a short comment from Matthews, "I think we ought to cancel this interview," says Miller.
Numerous times, Miller said that he wished he was over in the park with Matthews so he could get up in his face. This started off as just seeming uncomfortable, but it was quickly apparent that this wasn't going to become a typical rant by Matthews. Miller got very firm at one point, saying "Get outta my face. Step back and let me answer." Matthews had just said that it should only take "a few words" to answer his questions. "I wish we lived in the day when you could challenge a person to a duel, now that would be pretty good. (laughter from the panel) Wait a minute...wait a minute...don't pull that kind of stuff like you did that young lady, browbeating her. I'm not her. I'm not her."
Matthews says, "Senator, can I speak softly to you..."
Miller retorts, "No, no, no. Because you won't give me a chance to answer, you ask these questions and then you just talk over what I'm trying to answer like you did that woman the other day. I don't know why I even came on this program."
To which Matthews replies, "Well, I'm glad you did." Miller actually looks kind of angry. Matthews says, "Can I ask you this..." and is interrupted by Miller, "Are you gonna shut up after you ask me?"
Miller clarifies why he made his speech tonight and what he was trying to do. Things calm down a bit here, Matthews letting Miller finish his statements. Matthews asks Miller to come over tomorrow night "because everyone thinks you're going to beat me up." JC Watts says that Miller can come to dinner at his house anytime. The panel discussed the interview a little bit, trying to clarify what Matthews was attempting to do - it still doesn't justify what had happened.
One more reason I don't bother watching television any more, especially political shows. There's nothing to be gained intellectually!
Posted by: Mark at September 2, 2004 4:35 AMGavel to gavel on C-Span allows you to see the convention without the Democrat spittle lickers like Matthews. If I wanted the D talking points I'd have watched their brain-dead convention. Blow taps. They're done.
Posted by: Mr. Dart at September 2, 2004 7:33 AMgood for the senator!!!! chris matthews is loud, obnoxious and not the brightest bulb out there!
Posted by: ally at September 2, 2004 8:00 AMMatthews exposed himself in the following exchange:
MATTHEWS: You have said and it has often been said so truthfully that it is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us the freedom of the press. Was there not...
MILLER: Do you believe that?
MATTHEWS: Well, of course it‘s true.
MILLER: Do you believe that?
MATTHEWS: But it‘s a statement that nobody would have challenged. Why did you make it? It seems like no one would deny what you said. So what‘s your point?
Matthews takes offense at Miller's statement but earlier asked this ridiculous question:
MATTHEWS: Do you believe that John Kerry and Ted Kennedy really only believe in defending America with spitballs?
Sorry, Matthews, but nobody believes Kerry and Kennedy would use only spitballs to defend America so why did you ask this question? So what's your point? You engage in the very thing you accuse Miller of doing.
Posted by: Rod at September 2, 2004 8:32 AMSenator Miller had the courage to call Mr. Mathews on his source for information...the daily talking points provided by the democratic party.
He just forgot that Senator Miller is also on the mailing list.
Go Zell Miller. Chris Matthews is always rude and doesn't let anyone finish a sentence when he doesn't agree with their viewpoints. Matthews would be too scared to face Sen. Miller in a duel...about time that someone told that jerk from MSNBC off!
Posted by: Gini at September 2, 2004 4:12 PMWhat a hoot---Miller is my kind of man
Posted by: bret at September 2, 2004 4:48 PMMatthews has a machine-gun mouth set on automatic. Why anyone who has a viewpoint contrary to his would allow themselves to be ambushed by this lunatic is beyond me. Hats off to Zell Miller for stopping the "spitballs' from Matthews' mouth!
Posted by: Len Porochnia at September 2, 2004 8:24 PMSenator Miller would have gotten spittled on if he was next to Chris Matthews. Ewww!
Posted by: Ralph A Lombness at September 3, 2004 3:09 AMI'm just wondering how many of you who are foaming at the mouth about defending America actually did so? The hatred spewing from this group is amazing. If this is the future of American democracy, where you applaud someone who wants to react to questions by the use of guns rather than logic...well, welcome to Oceania.
Shame on you. Take it down a notch. You keep screaming and eventually the other side will start screaming back. That is the slippery slope down to the end of civilized discourse. That is the beginning of the end of American democracy.
Posted by: Allan Honeyman at September 3, 2004 7:23 PMGO Zell! He said in his speech many things that I have felt for quite a few years now about the Democrat Party, and I have been a democrat all my life. Chris Mathews is arrogant, belligerent and obnoxious and he deserved for someone to bring him down a notch or two. I think Zell was absolutely justified in attacking Kerry's Senate voting record! I never hear Kerry speak about his strong defense voting record in the Senate--probably because what Zell said is TRUE. I'm from Georgia and I can tell you that Zell was a great governor and has been a great Senator. He believes that elected officials are SERVANTS of the people, not their rulers. I would also like to remind Allan Honeyman that America is all about freedom of speech! Many are happy to use freedom of speech when it serves their own purposes, but would like to shout down or even stop the other side from expressing their views! The silencing of the opposition is exactly what happens under totalitarian Muslim, Socialist and Communist rule (and some of those exercising their freedom of speech to scream loud and long from the left belong to these very groups). Under the guise of "entertainment", anti-Bush propaganda was presented in the slanderous Michael Moore film, and Kerry said nothing; he embraced the values of the "stars" as being those of America and snickered at their jokes and remarks about Bush, he said nothing at the time about the Move On ads comparing Bush to Hitler (MONTHS LATER his campaign finally denounced them). He made no comment when Ted Kennedy accused Bush of telling "lie after lie after lie. . .", or when Al Gore accused Bush of betraying America, and I could go on. Yet when Kerry was the object of attack, he tried to sue broadcasters to stop the ads from airing, he tried to stop publication of a book, and then appealed to Mr. Bush to stop the mouths of his attackers. Shame on Mr Honeyman and others who would quiten the free speech of those with opposing views! The end of American democracy will not come because all sides are allowed to express their views, but quite the opposite! Democracy suffers when one side dominates and attempts to quiten opposing views. It is sad and even dangerous when members of the media attempt to silence those with views different from their own! The societies of our most bitter enemies are guilty of refusing to give air to opposing viewpoints! And those societies seek our destruction even now!
Posted by: George Smith at September 4, 2004 10:39 AMWow. This is the most biased webpage Ive seen in a while...
Chris Matthews is not a funnel of Democratic talking points. Just because he calls Senator Zell Miller on obviously spurious remarks does not mean that he is biased. HE IS A REPORTER. His job is to ask questions, find truth. This interview is not proof of a biased media, it is merely proof of a Senator who has gone a little insane from being anachronistic himself.
And what do you guys think of Bill O'Reilly, a man with a similar stylr to Matthews, but is CLEARLY biased?
Posted by: Andre at September 7, 2004 8:29 PMIn response to Andre, I think that people are so used to the left-wing conspiracy of most media that when a reporter/anchor from the media is truly neutral, we think that he is a right-winger.
The dominant ratings of Fox News Channel is a good indicator that people are getting sick of this left-wing conspiracy in the media.
Posted by: Ryan at September 8, 2004 9:26 AMChris Matthews always asks long, multi-part questions with accusations thrown in, then gives the guest less than five seconds to respond, and then he's on to the next 'question.' Seeing Sen. Miller call Matthews on it was just beautiful -and so long overdue. Kudo's to Miller - he put Matthews in his place, and absolutely slammed Kerry in his RNC speech. He get's an honorary (R) before his title, and one hopes he will do what he should have done long ago and join the Republican party.
For anyone to say Matthews is not biased...I feel sorry for those people. They completely lack any critical facilities.
Polls are looking good... Bush in 04, do to Kerry what we did to Gore!
Posted by: Don H at September 8, 2004 8:33 PMRe: Mr. Smith:
Man have you got it exactly backwards. You are the one who wants to silence the press. Matthews is the press. Zell Miller is a racist, xenophobic crypto fascist who started on a rant when asked a question.
I find it amusing that you think the right is not getting its say when people like Sinclair Broadcasting forbid the mention of our dead troops' names, but put on an hour of bold-faced lies attacking the Democratic presidential nominee. I don't hear you complaining about Bill O'Reilly screaming at people to "Shut UP!" It is not up to the press to silence anyone. Asking questions is not silencing. Incompetent, foaming, ranting responses are the problem of incompetent, foaming racists who do not wish to answer a question which goes to the base of their illogical positions.
When you wish to silence the press, first you start by accusing it of bias, then you talk about bringing those "liberals", "fascists", "communists" or whatever label is convenient to you at the time under some kind of control. Then it is all over. People like you scare me. Further, people like you scare the rest of the world. We are 4% of the world's population. If we keep on this way there will be a day of reckoning, and when it comes people like you will be standing there with a stunned look on your face wondering, "Why do they hate us?"
I'll tell you why. People like you accept everything your leaders say unquestioningly. The rest of the world be damned. Invade Iraq! They have WMD, err, no WMD? Well, he killed a lot of people with WMD back in 1992. And who supplied him with the technology and the materials. US! And you wonder why they hate us. Get a grip.
