Bill Richards writes in Friday's Seattle Times about the paper's announcement that up to 110 positions would be reduced from the full-time staff by mid-February. On top of those cuts, an "undisclosed number of part-time workers" will lose their jobs and 45 customer service jobs will ultimately be outsourced.
The company has blamed the losses on long-term shifts in Seattle's economy and on the Seattle paper's continued participation in a joint-operating agreement (JOA) with The Hearst Corp., which owns the rival Seattle Post-Intelligencer.
Should a JOA continue to be enforced if its breaking could put one company out of business, but allow another to operate in a financial stable way?
