Nicholas Berg & The Media

Lots of people have been talking about the Nicholas Berg video, and whether or not that the news media should be showing it in its entirety for the viewers. I had thought that it would have shown up somewhere mainstream by now, but I hadn't found it anywhere big. However - after viewing the video beginning to end, I can somewhat see why it hasn't shown up on Big Newscast. A lot of graphic images and video have shown up, but this is pretty stomach turning, IMHO.

Yesterday, The National Debate's Robert Cox wrote about how an article by Maria Newman in the New York Times reads somewhat like Ms. Newman might not have seen the video herself. After reading the piece, I think it is possible the author didn't see it - but I can't be sure. The article's title is "Video Appears to Show Beheading of American Civilian" - Mr. Cox is curious to know why the word "appears" is in the title - rather than just "Video Shows..." The one thing to keep in mind is that Ms. Newman probably didn't write the title - an editor did. The video, to me, does show the decapitation of Mr. Berg - it doesn't "appear" to do so, unless you start insinuating that the video is faked somehow. 1 Video + 1 Body = 1 Murder.

The end of the article has a statement, "according to journalists who watched the complete tape," which could lead me to believe that she might not have made it through the tape. This doesn't mean she can't write an article for the Times based on details discussed about the tape or happenings thereabout. People write articles about things they didn't see firsthand all the time - so there isn't anything wrong with it.

[update: 5/17/04 - 12:55pm] Some people have written and stated that the movie at WMAL isn't working. I just buffered the entire video and it plays flawlessly. Please be sure to not overload their servers too much if you do happen to view it there. And to those who have written me and were somewhat rude about "attending to finding you a new video," I think you could be a little nicer. I was attempting to provide a service when I posted this link - it is in no way intended as a replacement for your own due diligence if you really need to see the film.

This is humanity at its most dispicable. Not only the fact that these thugs have shed the blood of a man, a father and husband but the fact that there are so many who are demanding to see the video.
