Gary Lundy, 49, Knoxville News Sentinel sportswriter

On the Knoxville News Sentinel's website, there is a blog written by staffer Michael Silence. On Monday, Silence wrote that sportswriter Gary Lundy passed away after suffering a heart attack while in the newsroom, and left the comments open for people to pay their respects. What happened next is amazing - readers, former co-workers, people who were students with Lundy at the University of Tennessee all wrote in, even a former pastor at the Methodist Church he attended shared his thoughts and prayers.

I am posting this a long time after Gary's death, but I just learned of his death today. I have not seen Gary in a long time. I knew him from the Roane County News, where he was sports editor and I was lifestyles editor and general reporter. Our desks were side by side, but we were usually so busy meeting our deadlines that we didn't talk much. Once in a while, he would interpret a TWRA release for me or something. He was always a calming influence, and I was always amazed at how quickly he could pull the sports section together. I am so sorry this happened at such a young age.

Absolutely shocking news about Gary Lundy.

I have read his column for years.

I e-mailed him to comment that his style was that of late Jim Murray of the LA Times.
