For the last week, a ton of media coverage has been dedicated to the passing of Pope John Paul II. As the College of Cardinals is set to convene and vote on who will lead Catholics going forward, this may be the first time that a real, worldwide public sentiment could be gleaned as to who the next Pope should be, based on our telecommunications and Internet infrastructure.
As a way to try and grasp what people are thinking, a Philadelphia, Pennsylvania-based attorney Patricia Dugan has launched a website, ElectAPope.com, to help educate people a bit about the papacy, offer insights into the rituals that have taken place in the last few days including Friday's funeral, and allow individuals to place their vote on who should be the next Pope. Dugan's unique interest is that she is one of a very few people in the U.S. who practices both Christian Canon Law and Civil Law, and is "connected" to Pope John Paul II in that both attended the Angelicum in Rome for their studies.
Don't be surprised to see Dugan on a news station near you in the next few days.
Outside of the fact that the Yankees made two huge comebacks in today's game against the San Diego Padres, I actually noticed some things that have changed at the Stadium.
For one thing, Cracker Jacks are back! And not only are they back for sale (bye bye Crunch 'n Munch!), but the snack is sponsoring the 7th inning stretch.
Also back in action is the out of town scoreboard, which was absent earlier this season (I think even as late as this week sometime) from out in left field. It's back, and whatever ad replaced it (I can't remember whose it was) is missing - now it has an advertisement for the Daily News right below it. And, they've managed to make the new "tv-ish" scoreboards on the loge decks catch up to the other scoreboards when it comes to balls, strikes, and outs. I'm glad to see that the many, many complaints by fans this season have resonated with the Yankee brass....now, if only they'd get rid of the "YMCA" dance by the guys dragging the field in the middle of the game.
